Communication means transferring information from one place or person to another. The school communication system should be formal and positive. At Rhodes Park School, English and French are used as modes of communication. Formal language is used when communicating to pupils and with other members of staff. Pupils should also communicate formally to their fellow pupils and to all members of staff at all times. Guidance and Counselling programs are initiated to enable pupils to communicate positively and effectively. Through the pastoral system of education pupils are guided in their way of life. Class teachers give the pastoral education through tutorials. Where need arises, parents are consulted in attempts to find out and solve children’s personal problems. Teachers should continue guiding and counselling the children so that they can appreciate and manage their personal problems.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND SCRIPTURE UNION
Through Religious Education and the Scripture Union Club, pupils are taught how to conduct themselves responsibly. They are guided spiritually so that they can make wise decisions and judgements. To increase moral and responsible behaviour among pupils, a pastor or chaplain should be invited occasionally to talk to the children. Pupils should also be encouraged to preach to their fellow pupils. Visits from other schools are also encouraged so that children may share and learn from one another.
NUMERACY AND PROBLEM SOLVING
Developing pupil responsibility should be a continuous process so that children realize the seriousness of the school system. Children need to be talked to consistently. Teachers should not resort to punishment. When and where punishment has to be employed as the last resort, this should not be cruel or some kind of torture. Where need arises, parents and the counselling staff should be invited to talk to children who continue acting irresponsibly. Confidentiality should always be upheld. To encourage responsible behaviour, pupils who have really changed positively should be complimented publicly, e.g. during school assembly.
