Every so often, a story comes along that reminds us of why we do what we do — a story that proves education is more than books and exams, but a journey that can shape leaders, innovators, and global changemakers. This term, Rhodes Park School had the privilege of celebrating such a story when we hosted the Rhodes Scholarship team and welcomed back one of our own: Mr. David Jeevankumar, Class of 2017, now a proud Rhodes Scholar.
David’s return to the very halls where his journey began was nothing short of inspirational. His presence was a living testament to the idea that from small beginnings come great achievements. Standing before our learners, he not only spoke of resilience, discipline, and dreaming beyond borders — he embodied them.
During his time at Rhodes Park School, David distinguished himself as an all-rounder whose leadership, curiosity, and perseverance set him apart. He was a Class Councillor, House Captain, Chess Captain, and President of the JETS Club, roles in which he showed integrity, innovation, and teamwork. His involvement in the World Scholars Club reflected his thirst for global perspectives, while his participation in cross-country highlighted his determination and stamina.
In 2017, David received the Head Teacher’s Award during the Great Academies, a recognition of his commitment to excellence across academics, leadership, and character. A standout moment in his Rhodes interview perfectly captured his blend of intellect and composure. When the panel challenged his claim of being able to solve a Rubik’s Cube in under 50 seconds—a skill he honed in Grade 10—he calmly accepted and successfully demonstrated it.
As he shared his story with our current learners, David challenged them to aim higher, to embrace both success and struggle, and to see themselves as future leaders on global platforms. His words echoed loudly, resonating, remembering his former teacher’s saying at Rhodes Park: “It’s better to try and fail than not to try at all!
The visit of the Rhodes Scholarship team, highlighted by David’s presence, was more than just an event; it was a milestone in the history of Rhodes Park School. It reminded us that the values we instil — confidence, creativity, leadership, and compassion — prepare our learners not just for exams, but for life itself, and that indeed with resilience, discipline, and a solid foundation, anything is possible!
David’s journey from Rhodes Park learner to Rhodes Scholar is one we proudly celebrate and one we hope will inspire generations to come. His success is a beacon, showing every learner in our community that their dreams are valid, their efforts matter, and their future holds limitless possibilities.
